Cameras in Tyre and Rubber Plants: Curing Presses, Mixing and Heat

Ordinary CCTV fails in a tyre plant exactly where it matters. Even a top-spec outdoor camera such as the AXIS Q1656-LE runs to a maximum 60 °C ambient — hot air above a bank of curing presses can sit at or past that. Spec by zone, not by plant, and put the money at the press mouth and the Banbury bay.

You run 200 to 1,000 workers across mixing, calendering, building and curing. Your safety file is now written against the OSH Code, not the Factories Act. Your insurer is asking harder questions at renewal. And someone has quoted you 40 cameras at a flat rate per camera, which is the wrong shape of answer for this factory.

Why the curing hall defeats a standard camera

Three things happen at once near a press: radiant heat off the platens, steam and condensate, and a slow film of process dust and mould release.

Radiant heat is the one owners underestimate. Ambient in the aisle may read 42 °C while air two metres above a bank of presses is hotter — and camera ratings are ambient ratings, not "close to a heat source" ratings. A camera that survives a Chennai roof will not necessarily survive a mezzanine above a curing line without standoff and airflow.

Steam and condensate get into cheap housings through the cable gland, not the body. Insist on the gland being made off properly and a real drip loop, or you will replace units.

Carbon black does not simply dirty the lens. It settles, then absorbs and scatters IR, so night footage from a domed camera in the mix bay degrades to a grey smear within weeks. Plan the cleaning round into the contract from day one — most plants do this at the weekly shutdown, and the camera schedule should ride along with press maintenance rather than sit in a separate file nobody owns.

What video actually earns at the press

Not "watching workers." Three specific things.

Press-cycle adherence. A curing cycle has a fixed time. Under-cure and you risk a warranty claim; over-cure and you burn energy and throughput. Video timestamped against press open and close gives an independent record of actual cycle time by press, by shift — including presses your SCADA does not cover because they predate it. When quality disputes a batch, you have the door timings.

Reach-in during the open window. The dangerous moment is not the cure, it is the seconds when the press opens and the operator reaches for a stuck tyre or a bladder that did not release. A camera watching the press mouth can flag entry into the danger zone during that window. This is a detection and evidence layer sitting on top of interlocks and light curtains — see /safety/machine-guarding-danger-zone-detection/. If an interlock is bypassed, video tells you who and when. It does not stop the press.

Green tyre handling. Green tyres are soft, expensive and easy to deform. Video of the handoff from building to the curing rack shows drops, stacking beyond spec, and how long a tyre sat before cure. Owners are usually more surprised by the dwell-time data than by the drops.

The near-miss log an insurer will actually accept

Most plants keep a near-miss register written up on Friday from memory. Underwriters know this.

A video-backed log is different: each entry carries a date, a press number, a clip reference and a closure note. Over a renewal cycle it does two useful things — it gives you a defensible position when a claim is contested, and it gives your broker something concrete to argue with. It also survives staff turnover, which a paper register does not.

Practically: define five or six event types (danger-zone entry, guard override, spillage, forklift–pedestrian conflict, hot work in the mix bay), retain clips for a fixed period, and review them in the weekly safety meeting. What the OSH Code changed for you

Write your documents against the OSH Code 2020, in force since 21 November 2025. It consolidates 13 laws, the Factories Act 1948 among them. Factory coverage thresholds were raised to 20 workers with power and 40 without — but establishments carrying on hazardous activity are covered regardless of headcount. The Code also carries powers to specify maximum permissible limits of exposure to chemical and toxic substances and to mandate medical examinations in hazardous processes — directly relevant to a rubber plant, where fume and process dust are the classic exposures behind the UK regulator's occupational-cancer work in this industry.

Note what this does not say: no Indian statute makes CCTV mandatory on a factory floor as such. Anyone telling you the Code requires cameras is selling. Separate obligations do exist elsewhere and get conflated with it — some states attach CCTV conditions to permission for women on night shifts, and customer or tender terms frequently require recording. Where cameras help legally is evidentiary: dangerous-occurrence reporting, exposure-control verification, and demonstrating that a control you claim to have is actually in use.

What this does not do

Be clear-eyed, because the wrong install costs money and goodwill.

Cameras do not prevent a press injury. Interlocks, two-hand controls, light curtains and proper isolation do. Spend the guarding budget on cameras and you have bought a recording of an accident.

Fume and dust are invisible to video. Your exposure problem in the mix bay is measured by sampling, not seen. A camera can show you the extraction hood was switched off; it cannot tell you the concentration.

Cameras in the wrong place create liability. Rest areas, changing rooms, toilets and the medical room are off-limits — /compliance/cctv-banned-areas-factory-india/. Footage of identifiable workers is personal data. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 you owe workers notice about what is collected and why; penalties run up to ₹250 crore for failure to take reasonable security measures to prevent a data breach. Post the notice.

Cameras will not fix a productivity problem caused by scheduling. If presses idle because compound arrives late from mixing, video shows you the idling. Fixing it is a planning job.

And an over-monitored floor loses you your best operators. Tyre plants compete for the same fitters as every other engineering unit in the cluster; a system framed as surveillance breeds turnover. Frame it as press safety and cycle data, brief the union or works committee before install, and show the operators the screen.

Does it pay?

For a mid-size plant, the honest arithmetic is hardware and cabling up front plus an AI layer billed per camera per month. Payback comes through avoided quality escapes on cure time, scrap, pilferage at dispatch, and — slowest but largest — a safety record that keeps your premium from stepping up after an incident. FAQ

Can a normal CCTV camera survive next to a curing press? Usually not for long. Industrial cameras are commonly rated to about 60 °C ambient — the AXIS Q1656-LE specification gives −40 to 60 °C — and near a bank of presses local air can sit at the top of that band for sustained periods. Mount at a standoff with airflow and a sunshield, or use a cooled housing where geometry forces you close.

Is CCTV mandatory in an Indian tyre plant under the OSH Code? No. The OSH Code 2020, in force since 21 November 2025, consolidated 13 laws including the Factories Act 1948, but it does not mandate cameras on the shop floor. Cameras help you evidence controls you already have. Check state night-shift conditions and customer contracts separately — those are where recording requirements actually appear.

How do I stop carbon black ruining image quality? Choose bullets with flat, wipeable front glass rather than domes in the mix bay, prefer external or offset IR over built-in illuminators where a dust film will bounce light back, and add camera cleaning to the same weekly shutdown checklist as press maintenance. Assign it to the maintenance supervisor by name, not to "housekeeping".

Do I need thermal cameras? Rarely for safety; sometimes for fire risk in green-tyre and scrap-rubber storage, where piled rubber is a heavy fire load. Thermal is a targeted spend, materially more per point than a standard camera. Start with a couple of points over the highest-value storage rather than a thermal system across the plant.

How long should I keep footage? Long enough to cover your incident-investigation and claim window, short enough not to hold worker footage indefinitely under the DPDP Act. Most plants land between 30 and 90 days, with flagged safety clips exported and kept separately alongside the near-miss log.
